Q: Assalam o alikum Wa Rehmatullahe Wabarakatuh

I am living in Sweden, originally belong to (xxxxxxx). I keep taking light from your lectures on (online) youtube (etc) whenever I am confused about anything.

There is one question. I will really appreciate if you can comment on that. I have read somewhere that it is not allowed for a woman to change her surname as her husband after marriage. In the reference I have found Al-QURAN 33:5 that addresses for the adapted child. Also I have seen a HADITH (Ibn e Majah) quoted without any reference number that states.
The Prophet (salla Allahu alahi wa sallam) said: “Whoever calls himself by other than his father’s name , will be cursed by Allaah, the angels and all the people.” (Reported by Ibn Majah)

I always look-up for the reference and cross check it as I find it the only way of my satisfaction. Can you please comment on it

A: Walaikumsalam,

May Allah (SWT) bless you.

For the purposes of identification, citizenship matters, etc.  a woman may take on the name of her husband. It would be prohibited for her to take on the name of another (e.g, her husband, etc) in order to renounce her lineage.

The curse that you have referenced is for that individual that is attempting to alter their lineage, or that person that is using a change in last name for deceptive purposes, etc.

We thank you for your query, kindly remember us in your duas, ameen.

Allah Certainly Knows Best.
