dress, country, outer garments

Q:Can a Muslim woman wear her country’s traditional dress in public, provided  it covers the Awrah, meets all requirements of Islamic dressing and does not  reveal the form and shape of any part of the body? Or is it obligatory (fard) for  her to cover up using an outergarment (jilbab/abaya)? Please clarify…

Answers:

  • She may wear her traditional dress.
  • So long as her body is properly covered, she does not need to always wear an abaya.
  • Abaya is used as a precautionary measure, it adds greater modesty.
  • Some wear Abaya that continue to expose the body. This too would not be correct.

fasting start time

Q: Assalam Alaikum, I have a basic question regarding fasting. The Fazr salah time for 6/29 on the Ramada Calandar provided by Khadeeza mosque says 3:56 AM. I intend to fast and when to stop eating? Can I keep eating until the Fazr time which is 3:56 AM or do I need to stop eating 15 mins before Fazr time? Please clarify. Allah-Hafeez. (Allah Protect you)

A: Walaikumsalam,

You should try and stop about 2 to 3 minutes prior to the time given calender. So if it states 3:56, try and stop eating by 3:53-3:54. You should try and stop to the amount that one can reciete 30 or so very short Ayah. (The size of Ar-rahman)

If a person stopped eating based on the calendar that states 3:56, that too would be fine.

nephew and niece has developed liking

Q: My real sister has proposed for her son the hand of her husband’s niece. The parents of girl are not agreeing for the reason that their elder daughter is not married as yet. My nephew and niece has developed liking towards each other and insist getting married to each other. Is it allowed for girl to get married without the permission of her parents. I am afraid if they are not married soon it may lead to some unwanted results . Please enlighten me with the context of hadith if there is any way out. Jazakallah khaki ran

A: The cultural practice that people must get married in a particular manner is baseless. It merely crates problems for couples. They should not get married in secret. If they are to commit zina, they should take the matter to the local mufti and discuss it with him.

Crescent-Sighting Criteria

The Muslim community of Salt Lake City frequently has questions about the criteria used by the Islamic Society to determine the beginning and end of Ramadan, and the two Eid celebrations. Below are the criteria put into place by the Hilaal Committee of the Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake City:

  1. Islamic Society will accept duly verified reports of crescent sighting from anywhere in North America.
  2. All reports of naked-eye sighting of the crescent must be verified by experts with knowledge of Islamic rules and regulations in this matter, and aided by astronomical information.
  3. If the sky is clear, the concept of Jamme Ghafeer (a large number of witnesses) shall be used to authenticate reports of crescent sighting.
  4. If the sky is overcast, expert testimony shall be essential and over-riding unless validated by Jamme Ghafeer.
  5. If astronomical data suggest that it is improbable to sight the crescent on a given day, Jamme Ghafeer shall be employed to reach a decision.

May Allah help us and guide us. Ameen.

Q:Salaam Walikum Imam,

I have been wondering. Lately, there are some people who I pray with at home and he speaks his sijda and rukh loudly. You can hear what he is saying. Even while sitting and reciting, you can hear his lips moving. Even in Sun-net, you can hear him recite. It is disturbing my prayer, and I find it unpeaceful. Isn’t it bad to disturb ones prayer while you are in prayer? The one who is causing harm, isn’t he killing his prayer, while killing other’s prayer? And is it a must to hear your own recitation during prayer? And when is the only time speak loudly during prayer?

Thank you Imam,

Inshallah I will receive the answer I am looking for.

A: Walaikumsalam,

A person should read loud enough so as to hear what they are reading. This also helps in maintaining concentration.

If a person is reading so loud that they are disturbing others, kindly have the imaam or a respectable elder of the community go and explain to them the etiquette’s of Salah (prayer). Sometimes people read loud not with the intention of creating a disturbance; they may have a hearing issue, or may just be misinformed. Do not let the possible misjudgment of others take away your reward.

closer the better

Q: Sallamalaikum; I am a married man  in late forties, out of necessity I have to stay away from my family sometimes for ten months or more, as a man I have my needs so far I tried to abstain from any wrongdoing since I am trying to be a good muslim.
As a sunni muslim Iam not allowed to go for a short term marriage on the other hand I am affriad to commit a major sin. Please guide in this regard. Wasallam

A: Walaikumsalam,

One cannot marry a person in the following manner: I marry for the accepted Mehr (dowry) of $3000 for 120 days. This is tantamount to prostitution. This is not allowed. As you are aware, mehr is part of nikah (marriage), duration of time is not.

A person can marry on the condition, if things do not work out, they are at liberty to get divorced. Such a marriage can be for a second, day or even a hundred years. This would be allowed.

Placing the condition of time in the marriage is prohibited. Find ways to keep your wife near you.

The Tongue

Q: I told my mother if you feed my wife I will never look at her again. I really did not mean anything of it. What is the status of my nikah?

A: Make tauba. Keep three fast. Start to look at your wife and not the wife of others.
