The Dua of Taraweeh

Q: As our local shiek can you please show me proof that one must read this in taraweeh or between 4 rakats by the Rasool (SAW). Proof would be appreciated…….. If it not proven should you not stop the people from doing this bidaat? Shukran

A: I thank you for your inquiry. We do not have any proof from the books of Fiqh and Tafseer that the Rasool Sallaho alihe wasalam used to recite this given mentioned dua between every four Rakaats.

What we do have proof is for the following: Imām Ibn Abideen  mentions in Radd al-Muhtaar that one should recite the following dua three times. However, he did not call it specifically a ‘Taraweeh Dua.’ It is as follows:

Pure is the Possessor of the hidden and the manifest dominion. Exalted is the Possessor of Might, Greatness, Power, Pride, and Majesty. Exalted is the Master, the All Living, the one who does not die. All-perfect, All-holy, Our Lord, and the Lord of the angels and the souls. There is no god except Allah. We ask Him for forgiveness, we ask Him for Paradise, and we seek refuge in Him from the hell fire.

Out of love for this Dua, people made it a Dua to read between the Rakaats of Taraweeh. It would be better to say, people are recommended to recite what they are comfortable reciting. In this context, to impose or even promote one Dua over other Dua’s is not a good thing. We do agree, although the wording and meaning of the mentioned dua is correct, to accuse thus specific Dua of being part of the sunnah of Taraweeh is incorrect.

As a suggestion for those concerned, one can recite Quran, any dua they wish, read tasbeeh, additional nafil salah (if time permits), send salutations upon the Rasool Sallaho alihe wasalam, etc.

Out of the kindness for this month, please discuss this with your Musjid officials after Ramadaan. Do not create fitnah in this month. Merely because one person may be doing a wrong, does not give you and I the right to impose ourselves in a possibly wrongful manner or time.

I again appreciate your concern to do that which is correct.

Allah Certainly Knows Best.
