poor girl? New definition to poverty!

Q: I have 8 gold bangles and gold earrings and a gold chain for my engagement. it is worth 11 730  US dollars. Do i need to do Qurban? I have no other money or anything else. i am a poor girl. i am nt complaining. just telling you as it is. Jazakallah

A: If the gold was in exchange of a commitment and it does not belong to you until you get married, than in such a case you would still be considered ‘poor’ since the jewelry is not yours.

  • If you are too embarrassed to seek clarity as to who is the real owner of the jewelry and upon marriage you are told that indeed the gold was yours at the time of engagement, then in such a situation you would have to do a makeup qurban (sacrifice) and give all the meat to the poor. This makeup can be done any time of the year.

If the gold was given to you and you are the rightful owner of it and you can do as you please with it, then in such a case it would be wajib for you to slaughter an animal. In such a case you can sell part of the jewelry or you can take a loan and pay the loan back once you have been blessed with the money.

Allah Certainly Knows Best.
