its not only about the alcohol

Q: Assalamu Alaykum Imam,

How should we explain at work that one cannot go to holiday lunches that one’s work puts together even if there is no alcohol served.
May Allah (s.w.t) reward you for all that you do for the community.

A: walaikumsalam,

Everything in life does not need to be explained to everyone. Part of maturity demands that we do not say everything to everyone. Likewise, people should not expect detailed responses as to why a person can or cannot attend an event.  Many times explanations cause greater negativity for Islam. Knowing when to speak and when not to speak remains critical.

An event not having alcohol does not remain indicative of its permissibility. (this can be a misleading thought.)

Option 1) If you do not feel comfortable going to an event, merely say the following: I would not be able to attend. However, I would like to bake a chocolate cake and have it sent, where can I have it delivered.’ This way, you save safeguard your religious integrity, at the same time you remain to secure your employment.

Option 2)  Attend for a few minutes, apologize that you have to leave early and leave without taking any immediate benefit from such an event.

The above answers are based on many Muslims losing their job or being looked at in a contemptuous manner as a result of them being viewed as not being part of the ‘system.’ If not attending an event would cause destruction to one’s family and income, then attend only to ‘save face.’

Under ideal conditions, one should not enter events of sin nor show support to them with sending anything that would give benefit to an open sinner.

Evaluate your faith and make a decision that would not turn you or those around you away from deen.

Allah Certainly Knows Best.
