One must know the fard and all that which is necessary to function as an effective muslim on a day to day basis. This is the obligation of every believer. Should a person have additional resources thereafter to study the deen on a scholarly level while the parents would be taken care of and not be in need of this child (son), then in such a situation the child can seek the knowledge of deen and be away from parents for the duration of study.

Knowledge of deen is generally not fard for all, taking care of the parents is demanded by the Quran.

One should assist in paying of parental debts that are sharia based and/or that which parents need paid off for survival; likewise, one should assist in making sure that parents are safe and secure and are therefore bound to assist parents. The latter does not require earning to give parents that which is beyond the necessary for a person of modest income.

It is more cherished that a person follows the deen then learn it to impress self and other vain entities. Likewise, it is more cherished to know little deen and follow it in exchange of knowing a lot and not following it or being arrogant regarding it.

Allah Certainly Knows Best.
