Q: Aslam Alaikum,
Insha allah i am having a girl baby by July. I wanted to know if the name we chose is islamic and has a good meaning. We selected the name Neha  which means Rain/Love. eventhough we selected this from a website which has names for muslims, i want to confirm this with an imam. Please advise if the name has a wholesome meaning or should we combine it with another name ? Your advise and input will be very helpful.

Neha is not a muslim name. It is a hindu name. You have made salam at the onset of this email. I am to think you are a muslim. As a muslim you should know well that a muslim name is best and part of sunnah for your child.
In Islam, the naming of a child has an affect upon the character and behavior of the child. Likewise, it would be the name upon which a person would be resurrected on the Day of Judgment. For a muslim to be resurrected with a hindu name would not be a very Islamic action.
Do not try to be ‘over’ unique. Take from the names of Sahabiyah, family of the prophets (peace be upon them all), saints and those that are pious. This would be best for you.
Better yet, take from the golden classis: Khatijah, Fatimah, Zaynab, Aysha, Qholsoom, Ruqayah, Aamina, Habib, Sumayyah, Sara, etc.

Allah Certainly Knows Best.
