Allah(Subhanahu Wata’Ala) has created everything for a purpose. Nothing has ever been created in vain. As humans, we must live in harmony with every aspect of our universe. We must resist the temptation of exploiting any aspect of it. We must use it in accordance to the laws of the land and religion. Use only the amount we need. Just as you would want courtesy shown upon you, show it to all other entities as well. This is the general Islamic opinion of what our relationship should be with our environment.
