Q: Assalaamualikum varahamatullaahi vabarakatuh..

I wanted some suggestions from u regarding mehr.. M going to marry by couple of months..

1: can I demand my fiance through my family to make me perform haj or umrah instead of paying mehr?

2: if that can’t be possible if by chance if they’re gonna give me some particular amount.. How do I spend that mehr amount..? I mean can I give in charity ? I really don’t wish to spend that amount in world related things.. I wanna earn sawabffor

A: Walaikumsalam,

Our religion wants us to prevent ambiguity during our transactions. Hajj packages vary.  He may want a vip ($12 000) hajj, you may want a hajj worth$ 9000 with a $5000 clothing budget. Hajj packages are not so simple anymore.  As one can tell, this hajj can end up creating more conflict than blessedness.

Therefore, agree on a Mehr amount. You may now be able to use this mehr money towards your hajj. This will gain you reward, inshaAllah, ameen.

If you have a choice between hajj and umrah, one must choose Hajj over Umrah. Once the hajj is done, you may thereafter give umrah preference.
