Q: Assalam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakathuhu..

I want to know whether it is permissible in Islam to talk with a girl through telephone or messages through social network whom I get engaged?(not marriage).. Please explain with the reference of hadith(hadees)..

A: Walaikumsalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakathuhu,

There is no need for an extended engagement. Engagements that extend themselves with relation to time sometimes reduce desires, take away the love, make people do things that are sometimes wrong. Islam is simple in certain of its approach so as to limit unwanted temptations.

If you both need to settle down, convey this to your guardians and get married.

If you feel you need more information regarding the other , communicate through a third party. If you feel you need to communicate directly, kindly do so with a third person that is a guardian.  No two strangers (should) seclude themselves(for doing so) the third is shaytan. (hadith)
