Q: I was taken to an Islamic event with friends.  People were chanting Ya ghaus almadad. Can you explain this belief? It was my first time.  Jazakallah

A: To ask from anyone besides Allah is shirk. The phrase ‘Ya ghaus almadad’ refers to people asking Shiek Abdul Qadir Jilani for help in matters. Although we agree he was a pious man, we cannot ask people that have passed away for assistance. To do so would not only be bidah, but shirk as well.
