Q: Imam (muhammed) Shoayb
We recently spoke about a 16 yr. old in my neighborhood who wants to convert to Islam. I could not find on this website how she could do this on-line. I will try to arrange for her to speak with you from my house.

A: Under general conditions, parental consent would be necessary. Although from a religious point this person may be considered an adult, we would also need the person to be viewed as an ‘adult’ in accordance to local laws, so as to avoid any adverse consequences.
If the person insists on converting, refer them to an internet site that does the shahadah (articles of faith to enter into islam). This would be an act between them and the site at hand. Once the person turns of legal age, they can reaffirm the shahada in the presence of other like-minded, sane, mature Muslim adults. This is to merely make the person more welcome into the fold of Islam.
As people in America, we cannot condone nor condemn minors converting. We do applaud people making the best choices to their future. We would not prefer to be accused of molding the minds of the vulnerable and weak. At our Islamic society i request parental presence. For the record, a few parents have complied to such a request.
Allah Certainly Knows Best.
