Zakaat on a gift?

Q. I got a gift. Must I pay the Zakat on it, or must the one who gave me the gift pay the Zakat on it? Like for example, my husband…

A. If the gift was money, gold, silver or, for that matter, shares in a company, once it has been determined that you possess the nisab amount, you must pay Zakat on it. (Unless the one giving you the gift promised that for as long as you keep the zakatable item they would pay the zakat on it, and this agreement would expire upon the death of the one willing to pay the Zakat for the one receiving it, and upon the giver of the gift passing away, the recipient would be informed that they must take over the payment of their own zakat…unless such an agreement, or even an acceptable modification of such an agreed agreement was not made, you are to pay the Zakat on the Zakatable item(s) received by you!) It is now your item, and you bear all the responsibilities as well as the pleasures that come with it.

Allah certainly knows best.
