Q: Assalam u Aleykum Imam: I have a question in regards to serving Parents? My parents live with me and I have 3 kids all very young; the only way I support my parents is providing them lodging and taking care of their well being, I do not provide financial assistance, I feel sometime is unfair, I am the only bread runner in the family and have many financial obligations including taking care of my young kids. I work in a normal professional industry (9-5) job and is very volatile.  My father has properties and assets back in home country which he is not willing to sell and others are getting benefit out of it.
Please advise what my duties are in the manner of Islam as I feel I am not doing something wrong and being told by others that I am not taking care of my parents i.e. not giving them any money.

May Allah (SWT) bless you for all the good you are doing for your parents, Ameen.

One does not have to limit parental assistance to a monetary level. So long as you are taking care of all that which is necessary for them and/or making arrangements for parental needs to be fulfilled to the best of ones ability without creating harm to one’s personal family, one would be rewarded for such good actions.

I sense that you are not very happy with others using your fathers’ property abroad. If you feel that your fathers rights are being violated, this is something you must discuss with him. By contrast, if you are dismayed with others using his property merely because you do not want them to use it, this is a separate matter. As children we do not have the right to dictate to parents how they must use their assets, so long as what they are doing is within the parameters of the religion.
