Question: Asaamualikum, Brother Imaam

What islam says about music? Is it allowed to listen . If no , is there any Hadith on that ?

I think we need to correct ourselves, but not getting the right guidance.

I appreciate this question. I thank you for seeking clarity regarding this matter.

What is Islam? Islam is a religion that wishers good for all its people. When we view he music industry,  it is noticed that it thrives on being most ‘outrages’ in order to gain public attention. The words (lyrics) and actions (social life)  assist  in promoting every form of immorality. Their dress code (if we are to call it that) and presentation of self remains below the values of any religion or that which is to resemble it. Their social behavior remains far from the ways or any Prophet (peace be upon them all.)

In Islam, anything that  promotes and/or leads to sin and yet can be done away with remains prohibited. Due to its perverse nature, even if some call for its allowance,  due to its overwhelming adverse outcomes, it would  remain prohibited.

Proof from Quran and Hadith: The Quran states that vain and useless talks, singing’s, contributing factors to mischief making, etc. are all things to be refrained from:

There are some people who purchases idle talk {CD’s, recordings} (Lahwul-Hadeeth) to deviate (people) from the path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment. (31:6)

There will be from my Nation a people who will deem fornication, silk (for men), alcohol, and music to be permissible (this implies that music is impermissible); and there will be a people who will camp beside a high mountain, when a poor man passes by them and asks for a need, they will say to him, ‘Return to us tomorrow.’ In the morning Allah will make the mountain fall upon them and the others (who are saved) are transformed (meaning their hearts, thoughts, movements {dance moves} would be turned resembling that of) into apes and pigs, until the Day of Judgment. (Bukhari # 5990)

Imaam Bayhaqi reports that Jabir (RA), reported that that the Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said,

Singing makes hypocrisy grow in the heart like water makes plants grow. (Shu’bul-Iman # 5100)

What is allowed: Listening to songs that fall into the category of nasheed is permissible. Its words must positively inspire a person to do noble deeds. Nasheeds must also be listened to in moderation.

The Ayah Hadith regarding music are multiple. All the Ayah and Hadith placed together create strength in the ruling constituting its prohibition. Majority of fuqaha (jurists) have unanimously agreed that music is to be stayed away from and given a verdict of prohibition.
