You’re asking the wrong person…

Q. Why does Saudi Arabia do Ramadan and hajj a day early?

A. You are more than welcome to send your question to them with your proof that they are doing something wrong. Insha-Allah they would respond in kind.

Allah certainly knows best.

A hairy situation, indeed

Q. I am 16 and my body is like going crayzzeee on me. I had like this hair growing all over. Then it like started to grow on my lip area. Now I got like this hair on my sides. It is sooo embarrassing. Now before I ask my religious dad for like this expensive treatment, let me ask you: can I like take out this excess hair?

A. Not knowing if you are male or female, we are to keep our answer open to both genders.

To remove excess hair that functions as social deterrent and repulsion for those that are halaal for you is allowed in Islam. Certain conditions would apply to this hairy situation.

Men would be allowed to remove excess hair except for the beard. However, the beard can be trimmed upon certain length requirements being fulfilled. It would not be preferred for men to shave their legs and chest for it was not part of the sunnah of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam). If a man did so, however, a haraam verdict would not be issued upon him.

As for women, they can remove what is often termed as side burns, hair on upper as well as lower lip, arms, legs, etc. As for the eyebrow, one cannot pluck it in its entirety; just a little to eliminate any excessive bushiness is permissible. To pluck the eyebrow and make it thin like a pencil line would also not be allowed. One can remove just enough to get rid of the uni-brow look, and also take away any hair that is growing wild upon the eyebrow.

Other than what Islam has frowned upon or prohibited, men and woman can remove any hair that would be deemed as socially inappropriate, mainly to aid in a healthy relationship between that which Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) has made halaal.

You should also discuss this matter with your father and mother. Take this answer to them, and to a local scholar for clarification. Should they oppose what we have stated, please contact us with their proofs.

More about the beard…

Allah certainly knows best.

Where is Allah?

Q. I was in the chatroom and a guy who claimed to be a Salafi asked me where Allah was. I said everywhere. He then asked me, is He in the bathroom? Is this a fair question? Can a person be a Muslim if they ask such questions about Allah?

A. First of all, there is no need to be in chat rooms that would waste your time and indulge you in futile chatter. The Qur’an prohibits him and you for indulging in such unwanted chatter. You can certainly find knowledge in places that are more useful and beneficial.

?????? ???????? ??? ????????? ?????? ?????????? ????????? ??? ??????? ??????? ???????? ??????? ?????????????? ????????? ?????????????? ?????? ???????? ????????? ?

But there are (those from) amongst humanity who take part in idle dialogues (and discussions), without knowledge ( and understanding), to mislead (humanity) from people away from the Path of Allah and take religion as a mockery (ridicule): for such individuals there will be a Humiliating Punishment. Eid salah is better than nothing?

Q. My husband would not go to the masjid ever,  not even for Eid salaah if he can help it. He does not pray at all. It bothers me lots. And my sons (13 and 15) are seeing this behavior and they feel like avoiding prayer. To encourage husband and family I go for Eid every year, both times. Today he told me he heard that a woman must not go for Eid salaah…so I must worry about taking them this year. Is it true woman must not go for Eid salaah? If so, what do I do for our famiy’s Imaan?

A. It would be better for you to encourage your children and husband to carry out their obligations of their five daily salaah. You should try and take the family to the masjid so they can fulfill this obligation instead of focusing exclusively on Eid salaah. If it’s difficult to take them to the masjid, make one of them a leader of the other, and encourage them to perform the salaah as a group at home. Start teaching them surahs and teach them the value of performing salaah as a group.

Although we do not encourage women to go to the masjid without justification, by you taking your family to the masjid for their five daily salaah would be greatly rewarding for all of you. By you pointing them towards good, you would also attain its rewards (derived from Hadith).

As far as Eid salaah is concerned, it absolutely is not fardh for you, nor wajib for you to attend. However, should you do so; it should be done within the parameters of the Shari’a. As for now, you have a greater challenge than attending the Eid salaah . It is the challenge of having your family accomplish their obligations of the five daily fardh salaah towards Allah (subhanahu wa ta’aala)!

Thus, it would be important for you to prioritize matters with regards to that which is fardh, versus that which is wajib, sunnah etc. And set goals to accomplish the most important first….

Allah certainly knows best.

Making up for tawaf ziyarat

Q. OK, I got the point you have made here regarding woman and her menses. But that is the easy stuff.

Now (my case) what happens when I am in hajj, as it happened to me three years ago and it happens to many other woman to. My menstruating cycle went into the 8th day. We also were with a group, and I could not do my own thing. I had to leave but had to do tawaf-e-ziyarat. So my scholar, our guide told me that Allah would forgive me for all the money I spent to come for the hajj. Now you are saying something else above. So in my case what would a woman do. Can you guys agree on our Hajj for once!!! (Question sent 2nd time in…I did phone this question in and you said to email that talk on the phone with you, do you remember Imam?)

A. May Allah reward you for your patience and re-sending your question to us. In your case, based on the fact that you were on the 8th day of your menstrual cycle, limited in your scheduling arrangements regarding its changers with the airlines, etc, amongst your limited choices were for you to make your Tawaf in the state of impurity. (This is based on the fact that you had to leave and could not stay any longer to do your tawaf-ziyarah in a state of purity.  However if your Hajj tour guide was merely a tour guide and not a person knowledgeable on the rulings of hajj, or was a scholar but was ignorant of the rulings, or just refused to ask the many others that were more familiar about its rulings, then it is your fault for being naive about the people you ask regarding matters of Deen! So no passing on the buck with us.)

Your penalty:
There would also be a penalty for what occurs in a situation such as the one you had outlined. The penalty (also known as Dumm) for doing the Tawaff-e-ziyarat in the above outlined situation would be for you to slaughter a camel. Should this happen again to you, and you are limited on funds at the time of completing your tawaf, then you would have to slaughter the camel at a later point. However, it is something you would need to have done. Its meat must also be distributed in the vicinity of the Haram as well.

Should you ask, “how I can slaughter after my departure from Mecca?” then answer is simple: find trusted people there who would do it for you upon the attainment of funds, etc.

(Take the above response to your mufti, tour guide scholar. Should he reject our response, tell him to send us his ‘opinion’ in writing.)

Allah certainly knows best.

Always bleeding

Q. If a woman is always in menses due to health related concerns, we were told that when this happens, she must consider it all as part of haiz. So for 365 days she is menstruating. (questioned from a concerned gynecologist)

A. We appreciate that as a gynecologist you have taken out the added time to learn the finer religious rulings for the spiritual advancement of your patients. May Allah (subhanahu wa ta’aala) reward for this endeavor. Ameen.

The answer you have received is incorrect. Such a ruling are functioning in essence to block a usually healthy relationship from thriving, should your mentioned ruling be accepted. There is also a chance that the above ruling could prompt adultery on the part of a man and function as a point of frustration on the part of woman. The referred ruling is an inhibitor of fairness on the rights of humanity, and lacks astuteness to the finer laws of religion.

Also, in countries like the United States that do not allow a man to have a second, third or fourth wife, more complications arise. The mentioned ruling was given in an Arab country allowing for men to take a second, third or fourth wife. In America and Europe, such options do not exist. Other than the ruling being only of benefit to men, it deprives a woman of her shared intimacy. (This last statement is not promoting or limiting the issue of wives, but a point made towards those who argue that a man can go elsewhere for his pleasure while his wife is undergoing a state of continual menstruation.)

As for the woman, the restricted ruling you are mentioning would not only deprive a woman of shared adult intimacy; spiritually a woman would also atrophy due to the lack of religious duty fulfillment – for in such a state, such a ruling would force a woman to never perform salaah, nor would she be able to read the Qur’an, never go for Hajj herself (unless she was prepared to pay a huge Dumm — penalty for broken laws during hajj), etc. The impact of the above ruling could prove hugely detrimental to the imaan of a healthy woman who may be undergoing health issues.

Thus, our religion being one of logic and common sense, has imparted to us the opinions of jurists who have formulated a simple method for the benefit of our sister undergoing such an ailment:

Should a woman not be mindful her habit prior to her suffering from a 24hr bleeding session, she would be bound to go on a 10/20 ratio. This means, out of 30 days, 10 days/nights would be viewed as her having her menses, and the remainder 20 days would be viewed as istihaza.

In other words, the first 10 days would be like a woman who has a normal cycle. (Psychologically, this also helps her feel like a normal woman, or rather, like a woman without undue complications, which sometimes can help her mental confidence as well.) The remainder 20 days would be viewed as istihaza. Naturally, the laws of istihaza would apply to her when in istihaza, and the laws of menses would apply to her when she is in that given state.

(Note: although it would be ideal for a man not to touch his wife on adult terms, and for a woman to reach such a level of piety that would not demand adult activities, the realities of life would prove otherwise. Thus, research on the issue has resulted in the above response, due to scholars like ourselves taking into account the rights of Allah and rights of humanity.)

Allah certainly knows best.

Double dose

Q. What is the ruling for a woman who has a menses that occurs twice a month?

A. Scientific data does acknowledge that some woman have a situation that calls for two cycles in a month.

Your calculation method would be simple: remember, 15 days mentioned here is considered the least amount of days between ones menses, and known as point of purity.

Please refer to this article for further clarification, and other questions in this category for more knowledge.

Allah certainly knows best.

Done or not?

Q. My period ended on September 13th. On September 17th, I started a second period. Now I am told that I cannot perform salaah, touch the Qur’an, etc.

A. You have stated that your menses ended on the 13th. The least amount of days pertaining to purity is 15 days. Thus, shari’ah has termed the blood you had seen as istihaza and not haiz (your period.) In the case of istihaza , merely make fresh wudhu prior to each salaah and perform the given salaah. Likewise, you may also recite Qur’an upon removing the impurity from your clothing or physical body.

Allah certainly knows best.

Stop and go

Q. My sister this happened to her. Her period started, then it stopped after 1 day and one night, then it restarted after 3 days. Now is it haiz or is it not haiz and how can we know? How would she know which is which? It is all so confusing…and about salah, what does she do?

A. We intend to make it simple for you. Here is a small chart to make it simple for you, it would allow you to do your own calculation. However, we still suggest that after you do your calculation, you have it approved by another scholar to see if you understand the rules that apply to you:

  • Minimum amount of days for haiz is 3 days
  • Maximum amount days for your haiz would not exceed10 full days
  • Bleeding which was experienced by you does not need to be continuous but will be counted
  • Bleeding which occurs after the full 10th day is called istihaza.
  • The minimum period of purity between ones cycle is 15 days

In light of this information, the day it all started remains as part of your menses, the brief interruption of 3 days is also part of your menses. Just because you did not see blood or any sign of it does not mean that you have been freed from it. Hoping it becomes clearer for you: assuming your menses habit was 10 full days, and from the 1st day it all lasted up to the 10th full day and night, then we would say that anything seen after the 10th full day and night, would be viewed as istihaza.

Once you clearly understand the above, you would realize that during istihaza, salaah must be read with fresh wudhu for each salaah performed.

(See other answers on this topic for your clarification.)

Allah certainly knows best.

Bathing is a good thing. Always.

Q. Can i have adult relations with my wife after she had her monthly thingy (I am sure the brother means menstrual cycle) but before the showering? She is going to have her bath anyway, so does it matter? I am 19 and she is (age with held by our site) and moulana saheb  I really need your answer like quick because I can’t handle this waiting period every month, like her taking a shower and all this menstruating laws stuff. So bring it on with some  benefit on me man, please. (New York)

A. If your wife’s menses ended after the total completion of her tenth full day, then only would you be able to have conjugal relations with her without a bath. However, it would be preferred for a woman to have a bath prior to conjugal relations regardless of how affectionate the couples are with each other.

Take note of the following ayah:

???????????????? ???? ???????????? ???? ???? ?????? ?????????????? ??????????? ??? ???????????? ????? ?????????????? ??????? ???????????? ??????? ??????????? ???????????? ???? ?????? ?????????? ????????? ????? ??????? ??????? ?????????????? ????????? ?????????????????

And they ask you (oh Muhammad (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) ) about menstruation. Say: It is a pollutant; therefore keep away from women during the menstrual discharge and do not go near them until they have become clean; (this means that you can do everything with them, sleep with them, etc. with the exception of taking benefit from them between navel to knee, i.e. conjugal relations) then when they have purified themselves, you may approach them as Allah has commanded you; surely Allah loves those who turn much (to Him), and He loves those who purify themselves.

(2:222)

Allah certainly knows best.
