Likewise, Imaam shafee too once complained to a person named Waki – some say it was his teacher — he lamented regarding his memory.  Although differing versions of this couplet exist, the following can benefit us all:

???? ??? ???? ??? ????
I complained to Waki’ about my weak memory…
??????? ??? ??? ???????
So he advised me to leave sins
? ??? ???? ??? ????? ???
And (waki) said: Know well (oh lad) that verily knowledge is light (a special Noor – a special light filled with guidance for the seeker)
? ??? ???? ?? ????? ????
And the Noor of Allah is not given to a sinner.

Imaam Shafee claims, when he took the words of his teacher at heart, Allah (Subhanahu Wata’Ala) gifted him the memory that continued to make him the great man he was to later become. Continue Reading →

Hand shake — cross gender — non-mahram

Q. Salamaulaikom
I wear a hijab and try to follow every rule of hijab such as the hijab of eyes, mind, heart um and even hands. but what do i do when a non-muslim male tries to shake hands with me for like an interview and teachers etc. I tried to cover my hand with my hijab and then shake hands with them so its not skin to skin contact but it seems odd. Should i just tell them sorry can’t do or just shake their hands since the intention is clear.
Q. did the prophet of Allah hold the hand of Umme Haraam? If so then can we?

Q. Some say we can shake hands with men. some say not. now what is it the correct answer?

Q. For job interviews can men and woman shake hands. Is it a ghunna (sin)?

Answer:

?????? ?????? ????? ???? ???????

Congratulations on your choice of religious dress. Your challenge of aspiring to the noblest form of dress makes Muslims and traditional Jews, Christians as well as people that believe in all the great scriptures proud of you. May Allah continue to have His Sunnah spread as a result of your positive religious adornment.

Your questions imply that you are aware of the Islamic based response and arguments pertaining to the shaking of hands between cross gender non-mahram situations. You seem to want a way to effectively deal with this matter. We shall help you likewise.

First things first:

This matter has little to do with the idea of one’s ‘intention being clear’ at the time of shaking hands.  As noted below, no person could have had better intentions than the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) of Islam.

His (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) interactions:

When He (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) took pledges from woman affirming that they would follow Allah (Subhanahu Wata’Ala) and the Rasulool (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) in all matters of deen, these pledges were taken with the female holding a cloth on one side and Rasulullah sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) doing likewise on the cloths other end. No touch of skin ever took place. (Derived from Hadith.) Based on this alone, a piece of cloth would not function as a sufficient separation of one palm colliding upon another. In fact, in western society, ‘trying to cover your hand’ as you have indicated would make you be viewed as very unprofessional and fidgety; inevitably jeopardizing your chances of employment. (As outlined by specialist in the field of interviewing/hiring. Our response has been shared with interviewing/hiring personal, prior to its posting. They find our approach greatly acceptable, read on…)

The debate:

The debate of having cloth between palms of nonmahram participants has arisen in modern times with persons seeking excuses to fulfill their desires, with an accusation being placed upon Imaam Shafee for being part of such a view. This claim is false as outlined by the Shafee scholars such as Imaam Nawawee.  All Scholars have prohibited looking at strange (non-mahram) woman. If looking is prohibited between them, no person would ever argue that touching a ghair-Mahram could ever be sharia compliant action.

So how did people claim shaking hands can be done?

(The case of Umme Haraam)

She would be seated with Rasulullah sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam). She fed and even touched the hair of Rasulullah sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam). What is not generally mentioned is that Umme Haraam was not amongst the category of woman that Raulullah sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) could ever marry. Thus, shaking her hands would be most acceptable, should this have ever occurred. This has been mentioned by Imaam nawawee.

Fath-ul-bari – a text which remains as one of the greatest commentary books on the works of Imaam Bukari adds that even if she could be married to the Rasool (SAW), this incident remains specific to the Rasulool sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and cannot be generalized to all persons! As known, many issues remain specific to the Prophet sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam), and this too is part of deen.  Thus, the Hadith being used as allowance for woman and men to shake hands is taken out of context and functions as pure ignorance.

The hanafee position is most liberal (but read before you shake!)

The hanafee position is most liberal. It allows a man to shake the hands of an elderly woman. Most critically when there exists no desire of shared intimacy between them. Likewise, it is also allowed to look at an old woman, but not young girls/woman. As for men shaking the hands of younger woman, the same rule would apply. However, if it is even remotely perceived that an elderly man would prey upon a younger woman, then they must abstain from this handshake. (Few young men/woman find folks in their 70’s attractive or worthy of greater interaction then a mere polite greeting!)

??? ???????????????? ?????????? ???? ?????????????? ????????????? ????????????? ??????? ???????? ???????? ????? ??????? ???????? ????? ???????????

Tell the believing men (another place, tell to the believing) to lower their gaze and be modest. That is most pure for them. Verily Allah is aware of what they do.

If lowering the gaze is insisted upon in the quran, then touching is most certainly more arousing, and thus the handshake would be greatly prohibited for non-legitimate purposes!

So what do we do in the west?

Teachers, friends, co-workers, mechanics, doctors, best friends’ dad/mom…

If a teacher,  etc. extends their hand, it would be easier to enlighten them as to our religion and Islamic culture. Teachers exist to irradiate illiteracy, their function is to educated, and for us to educate the already educated would be a task a simply accomplish. One should inform such persons as to the correct Islamic gestures, so as to make it easy for other Muslims who may be in your predicament. In an environment of diversity, this should be possible.

Employment issue is just different. For some it is linked to survival

If an employer extends their hand towards you, and it so happens that you are wearing the Islamic dressing, then it would not be asking the employer too much, when you state to them: I would be keen on shaking your hands, but I am bound by certain cultural rules that prohibit me from doing so.’ If you are not dressed like a Muslim, then for you to state the above would give you and your religion a bad reputation. For the employer would wonder, you dress and act like a disbeliever, but when it comes to the hand shake, you become pious! Part-time ‘Musliming’ is not allowed (ayah).

Reality: it’s all in the approach, this too is dawah

If one fears discrimination, and thus shakes hands with members of the opposite gender; repentance would be sort. True repentance requires making ‘good’ on a poor action. (Based on Ayah.) Thus, one way to accomplish this end; once employed (after all the handshaking was done), send a cordial note of appreciation to the new employer, primarily to show the good nature of Islam. Once your probation period is over, send a second thank you note as to how much you enjoy the company with also adding the following: I kindly seek 5 minutes quite time to pray in privacy during my lunch break without hindering our companies’ productivity or gaining attention to myself. As also noticed by our companies conservative dress code, I am also bound by certain cultural conservative rules that may seem peculiar to some. One of them includes for me to not shake the hands with members of the opposite gender. Should you observe me showing a reluctance to such a handshake, please do not be offended….Please do not be offended by my request.’  (a few more polite words can be added to conclude the note.)

Should the note sending be too cumbersome, merely ask Allah (Subhanahu Wata’Ala) for forgiveness, and try not to repeat actions that would show weakness for the standards you have chosen to maintain.

America the new

In the age of cultural diversity and sexual harassment, many companies are sensitive to such wishers. By you sending the above note, you would be helping people to attain greater level of cultural sensitivity, also helping woman/men that may insist on not shaking hands, and yet be accepted as a result of the information you have passed. This is one of the greatest forms of dawah, dawah with moderation and sensitivity to Islam and the west.

never let others fool you

Assalamu Alaykum,
Q. 1) What can I do for Islam?
Q.2) what can I do to better my ummah?
jazakallahu Khair

?????? ?????? ????? ???? ???????
A1. Be the most excellent Muslim you can ever be. Submit yourself to all the teachings without  second guessing yourself or Islam and its contents.

A2.Be the best Muslim you can ever be. Be firm on religion and never let others fool you once you have made a good righteous decision established through Quran and Hadith. Note well: sometimes  seemingly good people work for shaytan, stay away from them. This would a contribution to yourself and the Ummah. The Ummah wants winners, not wishy-washy people. We have plenty of them. One less would be a great blessing from Allah (Subhanahu Wata’Ala). You can do this for starters to better the Ummah.

An added note: Islam is about people first  reforming themselves, then their families, thereafter the Ummah at large. For starters,  perfect your Imaam. The rest would follow insha-Allah, Ameen.

listen young fellow: i said NOOOOO… did you hear me clear?!

Q. Our family has turned into a mess. How does a woman or man refuse a Muslim marriage proposal without creating a tribal conflict and generational feud and family wars? Notjustanafganpakistanisomalimatter (hand delived question – june5th)

A. Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) was asked His blessed hand in marriage by a woman. He politely looked down after the person made the request. This was indicative of Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam’s) lack of interest. The female did not take it personally. A sahabi saw this interaction and proposed for the woman instead. She was a sahabiyah as well.

As a lesson to the ummah, she did not refuse this sahabi due to her wanting the prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam), or only a lawyer, or only an specialty qualified motor mechanic. She looked at the sahabi that was proposing to her (RA), accepted his proposition and he made the proper arrangements for marital success. Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) defended her by asking the sahabi to give her (RA) something of value as mehr. A second lesson is that on need not give a lengthy explanation as to why they are not interested in a given party.

Thus, although one need not say ‘no’ to a proposal, one can be silent as in the above example, (take the call after a week instead of a day!) Make a polite excuse: my child is studying, at this point I have to overcome certain personal matters, I am a little young/old, or I would like a younger/older person that is more compatible, more mature, one that afford marriage without running to mommy/daddy for bread money — are all plausible and possible excuses for rejection. The best would be the following in a situation of persistence: I honestly do not feel it would work out between our families. Its sounds harsh, but sometimes this is the only way certain people listen.

Generally our Muslim culture can read between the lines when a person is not interested.

Men can use the following claim: I cannot afford marriage at this point (this does not mean that when the female persists, the man must exploit her responses!) I need to take care of my parents; I have to complete my education prior to embarking on a marital journey, etc.  (a journey it is for those married!)

At all times be respectful to all parties. Never be rude. Never act superior. Who knows, your politeness may be well appreciated. When you are ready, the party you rejected may even give you a recommendation for a better spouse.

Once a NO has been given, never regret your choice. Never keep tabs on the one you rejected, or the one that rejected you. Never stalk anyone. Let each person live a contented life, and you live yours with respect and dignity! This is what we call: getting a life!

Dream: I see fish (but i really don’t fish!)

Q. Seen in my dream, small fish and big fish. Small fish was stagnant and big fish was moving. My friend and me were walking near the river as fish was seen. Lots of fish seen… (College student – utah)

A. We are lacking some detail. We shall answer based on what you stated as best as we can.

Huge fish implies wealth if you are able to catch the fish in your dream.

Small fish, more so if many of them were seen indicates that you would undergo grief and sorrow.

If the fish were small but few in number, example, one or two, then this possibly means that you would derive benefit from one or two woman.

As always, duaa has the possibility for making every negative turn into a positive.

nothing like a good book

Q.
Assalamu Alaikum,
I was wondering what scholars or Imams you would recommend for us to read? I remember at the conference you mentioned Imam Al Ghazali.
Jazakallah.
Time Sent: Monday June 1, 2009

?????? ?????? ????? ???? ???????

A. Since you have used the word ‘scholars’ and ’imaams’ as a recommendation, we are rightfully (we hope) assuming that you want author names that are of excellent caliber. Thus we are to recommend the following for our varied audience:

For the non-fickle mined

Our all time favorites remain Allahma Suyuti and Allamah Qurtubi for Tafseer, Hajr Asqalanis work relating to Hadith makes superior reading for the well educated. For a basic understanding of Quran, Ibn Kathir proves well for non hanafee students, while the works of Allmah Mufti Muhammad Shafee proves well for those ascribing to the hanafee realm. Although each Tafseer scholar may translate the ayah in the same manner, rulings derived are inextricably linked to aspects of fiqh, etc.

Giving you something simple

For basic fiqh, shafee students must get hold of at least the translated copy of a book called Reliance of the traveler. It is an excelled book, a must have for shawafees. For hanafee students, the basic works of Imaam Quduri usually proves well. (For students not ascribing to a a mazhab, we welcome you to become your personal mujtahid, or you can chose to confuse yourself silly with data you can seldom decipher)

Nothing serious but yet genuine

For more casual reading, peruse through the works of Ibn Qayyim al Jawziyah and the commentaries of Imaam Nawai. Make sure that these works are direct translations of the original authors and not translated work filled with translator’s personal opinions claiming to be the works of Imaam Nawaee. Shamail-e-tirmizi makes excellent reading for people that are passionate about the description of our belovered Nabi (SAW). These authors’ names have passed the test of time and remain favorable for people that prefer classical works of the sincere predecessors.

Modern readers that want pass and present

For modern day works, lots of lay people read and you are welcome to read the works of Jalaluddeed Rumi, the scientific writings of Harun Yahya, historical presentations of Abul Hassan Ali Nadwi have been greatly accepted within the Arab and non-Arab world. Allmah Iqbals works have been accepted by both, Muslims and nonmuslims, mainly from its poetic vantage point. Hayatus sahaba makes excellent reading to educate people about the challenges of the sahaba went through in life. Many have been moved by this book as a result of sincere reading. It is also a good idea to attain the khutbas of the Imaams of Haramain – Mecca and Medinah-tul-munawarah. Their content can be very inspiring. To gain a pulse of everyday life westernized countries, read Khlid Baigs works: first things first.

Friendly reminder

Read books that inspire you, that enhance your spirituality. Always avoid books that push a particular narrow view of life upon you. Books that make you argue and debate with fellow Muslims should always be avoided.

Our audience is also welcome to send recommendations as to classy good books that aspire the spirit and mind to a positive intellectual level. We would prefer author names of people that have passed the test of time, and maintain a high Islamic and secular standing.

Reaction to President Obama’s speech in Cairo

Speech Quotes from Muhammed Shoayb (imaam)

(Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake)

‘Many Muslims abroad view it as a challenge for America to keep up the positive momentum that is building around in the western world regarding President Barak Obama’s speech. As Muslims in America, we are positive that our President Barak Obama’s attempt to bridge the gap between past and present, old and new would be accomplished by all people that cherish peace and harmony for all of humanity.’

‘It remains to be a very well designed set of words…… its intent by far remains to improve United States global image. By far it would quell Muslim anger within some sectors, aggravate others that view it as words of manipulation to help improve sentiments.   Actions and words are separate entities. Muslims believe words and actions go and hand in hand, and we have to hope this for the president as well.’

(This speech of the President functions for) ‘Muslims not only need to be more greatly appreciative of the freedom America has awarded us. Muslims need to stand proud that they have have contributed within the realm of academia, politics, as well as in the area of religious culture and diversity. Muslims, as it currently stands,  I would say are more accepted in the United States then anywhere else and for that we should be thankful to our Creator. ‘

‘As Muslims, we share the same sentiments of peace towards all people around the world. Peace would be valuable for not just the Middle East, but the world at large.’

‘Muslims like all people attach importance to security for all. Not just for Muslims or for a selected group of people for a specified time period. ‘ Continue Reading →

Yusuf (Alai His Salam)

Q.
Asalamulaikom

Yousif Alihsalam’s story is one of my favorite story. But i am confused on Zalikha’s role in that story. I know that she fell in love with him and accused him and sent him to prison but what happens after that? i have read in different books different story. I heard that it is not mentioned in the Quraan if she married him or not but in a different book that i read a while ago and do not exactly remember what it was called mentioned that she had asked for her beauty of the other world and was living with Yousif. Please Clarify. Jazakallah

A.

?????? ?????? ????? ???? ???????

  1. As we had mentioned as part of our ramadaan Tafseer program, in the case of Yusuf (AS) your question focuses on a category that falls under what the uluma call ‘Israli riwayat.’ Simply stated: we do not necessarily accept nor reject certain claims. It is best not to do so unless we can substantiate our claims with legitimate proofs. To make an issue of its acceptance or rejection would not be recommended either.
  2. When stories of Prophets are discussed, it is best to stay focused on that which derived from Quran and Authentic Hadith, and accepted Tafseer works. However, sometimes commentators do add ‘flavor’ that is viewed as credible. Amongst them being the portion you have inquired about pertaining to the story of Yusuf (AS). The israli riwayat states: Once Yusuf (AS) was traveling with his entourage. He was gracefully  aging and never lost his beauty. He (AS) was graceful to look at, like all other prophets and remained focused on the worship of Allah (Subhanahu Wata’Ala) which enhanced the Noor of Allah upon himself. A woman remained on the side (possibly on the road), and as He (AS) passed her by. She looked up and saw it was Yusuf (AS). She could not miss the fanfare that was passing by. She requested to approached and greet the leader of the people. “Oh Yusuf (AS) do you remember me?’ He responded: ‘No.’ Therein she claimed: ‘I am Zulaikha.’ She asked him to make duaa for her so she could regain her beauty. His (AS) duaa was accepted and Zulaika was given her beauty in this world in exchange of attaining it in the hereafter.  They got married… Thus, some even refer to her as Zulaika Alayhers-salam (which means, upon her is Allah blessings!)
  3. To our (student) audience, what was the lesson of having her beauty being exchanged for the hereafter? What was the purpose of Yusuf (AS) marring her? Why do some award her the title of Alyhers-salam? These are few easy questions. Kindly answer them for us, so we know that our audience is not shortsighted in their reasoning….

(Correct answers attain an award of a candy bar… sorry, you’ll have to award it to yourself)

Traveler (too tired to be more vocal)

Q. As salam alay Kum Wa rahmat ul Lahee a Barakatuhu

We went out for dawah with the jammat at isha time one of the Jammat member stepped forward to lead the isha Salat, the Ameer of the Jammat reminded everyone that we will be praying QASR (Trimming four raka’s to two due to traveling).  So everyone made their niat as such.  The imam stood up after the first tashahud and people in the congregation reminded him according to the prescribed method.  however, The Imam continued to finish 4 raka’s and performed salam.  Some brothers requested the Imam that he should have performed sajdah sahoo while some maintained its fine.  It was then recommended that everyone just follow the ameer’s decision and we ended up repeating two raka’s again and called it a day.  Although we cannot change what happened but does a situation like this warrant sahoo where there is a difference in niyat between the imam and muqtadee according to the hanafi jurists knowing that the difference is not in anything except in the Raka’s of Salah?
