Q: Assalamu Aliakum-
I have a few questions: 1) What is the blessed amount of Mehr a man and woman should agree upon together? 2)Explain Mehr Faduma (RA)? 3) When is the man required to give the Mehr to his wife? May Allah reward you for your time and help. Jazakallahu khair.

1) The least amount of mehr one can give is ten dirhams (or that which is converted to no less than 31 grams of silver n value.) No marriage should have less than this preferred amount according to Ahnaf. Shawafee state that any amount that is agreed upon between mature spouses would allow the mehr to be viewed as correct. We prefer the former view based on hadith that states: no mehr should be less then ten dirhams (paraphrased.) Woman should not demand an exuberant amount of wealth, nor should a man be frugal if Allah has blessed him.
2) Rasulullah (SAW) had the amount of 400 dirhams approved for his daughter Sayidinah Fatima (RA). This has been converted to 1750 grams of silver. For this calculation, kindly go to here. (kindly place data in appropriate places for accurate results.) If one blessed, they should try and continue upon this sunnah. A marriage built on the sunnah would reap greater reward and value.
3) A woman can demand her hallal (permissible) based mahr (dowry) prior to adult relations (intercourse) with her husband. The amount can be demanded (and or requested) at the time of nikah by her representatives as well. Should she allow for the mahr to be given to her at a later point in time as agreed, this too would be allowed. She can refuse adult relations until it is paid in full. This is her right. If the man has not paid the mahr, yet he was awarded the right to adult relations (intercourse) he would be obligated to give its full amount without any deficiency, however, him not giving her the full amount as soon as possible after intercourse would not be sufficient grounds to limit him from not having adult relations with her once she has given him access to her (honorable self). He would be however sinful in denying her her legitimate mehr, more so if Allah has blessed him with the resources. None of the mahr can be refused to be given once the marriage has been consummated under general conditions.
