Q: Asalamualaikum,
I was wondering how does a husband go about paying zakaat on his wife’s gold jewelry that he has given as a gift for their marriage??? I may be incorrect but I believe…that the responsibility lies upon her to pay the zakaat??? however as a loving husband how would I pay it on her behalf?

The rule is simple: her jewelry, her zakat. His jewelry, his zakat.
If she is kind to let you pay, she has to give you her consent to do so.
You can ask her the following: can i discharge your zakat for you. The amount due to you this year is $ XXX XXX dollars on X amount of gold. Upon her acceptance you would have to discharge the amount agreed upon. Likewise, if you agree on paying only a portion of her zakat amount, you both can agree upon that as well, she would be liable for its remaining portion.
You not discharging her zakat as promised would not absolve her of her responsibility.
Zakat is not a 2.5% tax, it is the purifying of your 97.5% of your wealth.
Allah Certainly Knows Best.
