Q:
Salam,
I was wondering how does one become a TRUE wali of Allah like those people of the past? People wish to be modern today but I don’t believe in a modern Islam. Allah has not become modern nor has Islam nor has the sunnah of our beloved Rasul (saw) it is the same as it was 1400 yrs ago and my goal is to be like those people of the past. By people of the past I mean, Islamic scholars that did a great deal for their environment and talked about day and night, simple people who were so close to Allah that in today’s time they would (only because of their relationship with Allah) make muslim in today’s time look like very very misguided people? What steps would one take to achieve this status in the eyes of Allah? and how would one know they are getting closer to Allah? Please give some advice and also some history of pious persons of Islam and how they achieved such closeness with Allah.

A1: To becoming a wali (saint):
Eat halal. Attain halal income. Never slander or gossip anyone. Respect all creatures. Have genuine love and well-wishing towards all. Eliminate jealousy and arrogance. Eliminate wrongful anger! Never lie. Be remorseful of wrongs. Remember Allah in all your doings. Give credit to Allah alone. Pray for the benefit of all — friends, people you differ with, teachers, etc. Always have love for the oppressed, weak, poor and orphan. Be in genuine service to your parents. Always respect the good people your parents respect. Never take the fard action with a light heart. Love the sahaba. Love the pious. Never indulge in things that are doubtful. Never look at the opposite gender. Never lust after the forbidden. Never defend a wrong action or person. Do not seek the company of the wealthy. Treat each person with the same love and respect!
To follow each of the above would function as a life changer. Allah helps those that help themselves.
Examples:
A2: The likes of such people: the Sahaba, tabein as well as those that immediately followed them, Imam Malik, Ahmad bin hambal, Imaams Muhammad and Yusuf, Imaam nawawi, Allahmas of Jalalain, Junaid Baghdadi and his mentors Allahmahs Sirri and Saqti; Woman contributes to piety were Rumaysa Bint Milhan, Ramlah Bint Abu Sufyan, Rabiya Basriya, etc.
Live for a day in accordance to A1 and you would taste the beauty of Imaam (Derived from hadith.) Allah would start to open doors from places you have least expected.
Allah Certainly Knows Best.
