UPDATE: Dates for Muharram for this year, 2011, have been updated. This question was initially asked in 2009, hence the dates that were listed below were for 2009. The Islamic calendar being a lunar calendar, our months shift upwards by about 10 days each year!

Q: The two days of muharam that one must fast. What two days are they? (text)

A: The 9^th and 10^th or 10^th and 11^th are the two days you are possibly referring to. Should one decide to fast whilst in good health, then one must fast two of these days consecutively. Fast either on the 9^th and 10^th or 10^th and 11^th

These two fasts are not fard. They are sunnah. Those that do not do it are not sinful. Those that chose to do it would greatly be rewarded, insha-Allah, Ameen

This year, the 9^thof muharram would be on Monday December the 5^th 2009 and the 10th would be on December 6^th
