Q: Assalamalaikum, I am confused as to the schools of thought. I have heard that every Muslim should follow one but how do you really decide which school of thought to follow because aren’t they all correct to follow?

A: ?????? ?????? ????? ???? ???????
Every person does not need to follow a school of though (madhab.)If a person is a mujtahid — has all the necessary knowledge as it relates to the Quran, hadith, and can derive what is necessary from them, then for a such a person a madhab may not be required. In today’s time, such persons are a rarity.
Thus, for the lay person, they must pick one and use that as their easiest guide to getting to the Truth.
As for the ‘other’ schools that are not related to your school of thought, we must respect them, do not look down upon them or its followers.
The rule is as follows: my school is correct with a possibility of others being wrong. Not they are wrong and only i am correct. The latter is dangerous and a current day disease.
Respect all groups, ignore those that mock any school that is on haqq (correct path.) Once you live by this last slogan, Allah (SWT) would inspire you to the correct type of thinking (aqeedah.)
Allah Certainly Knows Best.
