Q: Is there any conflicts between Islam and Sports? Is it bad to be aggressive? I really enjoy them and was wondering what kind of negative affects they could possibly have. Time: Wednesday March 30, 2011 at 4:16 pm
Answers: Islam is a complete religion (ayah) allows for aspects that would create better health and conditioning for its members. Naturally, on a general scale, one does not play sports that remains out of ones environment — this may prove unsafe and limit the healthy competitive spirit that sometimes may be required for a healthy upbringing.
On the aspect of competition, healthy competition requires a person to compete with the following in mind: what are my weaknesses, how can i improve, how can i learn from my weakness so that off the court i can be an improved person. If you get angry on the court and this agner continues to manifest itself off the court, then you are a loser on both accords — game and spirituality. This in Islam is viewed as unfavorable.
The type of activities one takes part in, people you associated would affect your personality and religiosity. Thus, the sporting event and caliber of people should reflect your core values. As a general rule, a true sportsperson must do that which would gain the greatest strength without adversely affecting the faith.
From a religious point, although impractical for some, the best sports to take part in are as follows: archery, horse-riding, swimming, and fencing (or the usage of a sword for non violent purposes) to assist in gaining pinpoint accuracy, etc. ( the latter part may allow our site to gain favor with national security fans.)
For health purposes, done to the extent needed for health purposes and practical nature of muslim life in western nations: squash, racquetball, tennis, etc can also assist in health improvements. If you like to exercise alone, running, etc could prove well. I do recommend horseback riding, however, this may not prove highly impracticable in our current society.
Allah Certainly Knows Best.
