Q1. I took out a loan and still paying the loan amount. I also took a loan to help pay for my brother’s schooling. I am worth 250 000 dollars and I have a debt of 375 000 dollars. How can I figure out my Zakat and (Q2) do I pay Zakat because I am already helping my family?
A1. In order to calculate your Zakat, you would first need to determine the amount of the Nisab. Once you have subtracted your debt amount and it is noticed that you still possess a surplus (which in your case you do posses the amount of nisab and more), Zakat would be compulsory upon you (on this $125 000). However, upon subtracting the amount of your debt, had you noticed that your wealth did not reach the Nisab amount , you would not be liable to pay any Zakat.
A2. If your brother has less than the nisab amount, then you can give your Zakat to him, so as to have him pay for his tuition with that money.

Q. Sometimes while I am fasting, I get phlegm building up in my throat, does this thick layer of phlegm cause my fast to break?
A. Your fast is not broken. However, it would be better to spit it out in an appropriate manner and place.

Q1. My gums bleed while fasting, do I have to re-keep the fast? 2. My nose bleeds sometimes due to heat, does my fast go through?
A1. You should try and spit the blood out, although the fast does not break with you swallowing it, (provided that the blood is less than the saliva when it is viewed.) It would be best to re-keep the fast later on. However, your current fast is still valid.
A2: As far as nose bleed is concerned, it would require you to make up for that fast.
Allah certainly knows best.

Q. I am 78 years old. I am male. I have not fasted for the past 10 years. It is because I have diabetics. Doctors found me to be unfit to fast. Am I really excused from fasting?
A. If a reliable Muslim doctor has told you that you should not fast as a result of your diabetics, then you should listen to the doctor. Once you’ve established that fasting is impossible for you, merely give Fidyah which is equivalent to the amount of Sadaqa-tul-fitr to a person deserving Zakat. Or if you chose, you can feed one poor person for two meals to the extent that the poor person is fully satiated.
Allah certainly knows best.

Q. I suffer from Asthma, I cannot do without the Asthma pump…. Can I use an inhaler during fasting out of necessity?
A. No. Since it passes through the lungs and parts of it makes it to the stomach, the inhaler would be a nullifier of the fast.

Q. Since burial in a coffin is haraam, can we not remedy the situation so that the dead are not resting in haram?
A. It is haraam to place a person in a coffin out of one’s personal volition. If the law of the land requires that we place a person in a coffin, then we should follow the law of the land, unless an exception can be made due to religious circumstances.
Yes, the deceased would only be resting in ‘haraam’ if they had a choice between a coffin burial versus that of a kaffan burial and the deceased chose the un-Islamic practice.
