Q. Since burial in a coffin is haraam, can we not remedy the situation so that the dead are not resting in haram?

A. It is haraam to place a person in a coffin out of one’s personal volition. If the law of the land requires that we place a person in a coffin, then we should follow the law of the land, unless an exception can be made due to religious circumstances.

Yes, the deceased would only be resting in ‘haraam’ if they had a choice between a coffin burial versus that of a kaffan burial and the deceased chose the un-Islamic practice.
