Movie night and islam. Response can be read between the lines

Q: Imaam, in respect to you this is the forth time i have sent this question to you. I do understand you are busy. You are local imaam and i was advised to ask your opinion instead of a far away shiek. My question is this, Is it allowed to show the faces of people that are Sahaba to palpable youth? My daughter was describing a Sahaba to her friend on a movie and I did not know what to say to her. Is it recommended to show movies by religious institutions with religious people organizing such movie events? What are your thoughts? Should people and teachers of religion attend such events then shout  the impermissible nature of harams and halals. i.e riba, music, kuffar celebrations and the list goes on. hypothetically,  if friday or saturday nights are for movies should muslims also emulate such days as their movie days? Dr. (name withheld) Continue Reading →

why say: peace be upon Him’ when peace is already on Him (Pbuh)

Q:

As Salaamu Alaikum Imam,

I suppose these questions ought to be asked in a study group for converts (Islam 101), but so far the brothers haven’t committed to getting together in the same place at the same time to form such a group.  (Maybe in the Masjid after Jummah?)  My own independent studying hasn’t clarified these things (and a few others as well), so I’m asking in this forum.  I hope you understand where I’m coming from.  Thank you.

Why do we say “peace be upon him” whenever the name of Allah’s Messenger is mentioned?  Are we not asking for something that already is?  Or are we simply stating the obvious?  Either way, I find it redundant.  I mean if Muhammad, peace be upon him, hasn’t achieved peace, then who could ever hope to?  And if he has, then why mention it?

And why do we say “Subhannah wa Ta’ala” (sp?) after the name of Allah?  What does that mean?  Surely the beleivers acknowledge that the Creator of the Universe is, by definition, The Greatest (Allahu Akbar).  Is it really necessary to state that whenever His Name is mentioned?  “Praise the Lord” is a phrase I’ve heard all my life, and I truly beleive that none is more worthy of praise, but it makes for awkward grammar, in English anyway, to say so every time the Name of God is mentioned.  Is it really proper to say “Allah Subhannah wa Ta’ala” rather than simply “Allah”?

‘I am American christian and my husband is Iraqi muslim’

Q: Hello,
I am American christian and my husband is Iraqi muslim.  We have been married for 15 years.  I would like to divorce him because he brought his exwife to America back in 1997(without informing me first) and they got married again. Since 2003 we only see him a couple hours a week – we have a 14 year old daughter.  Anyway, I want an Islamic divorce because we married by reading something out of a book (he’s XXXXXX) and I don’t want him to get in trouble for having two wives.  Please inform me as to how I can resolve this matter.
Thank you Continue Reading →

birthdays and new Muslims

Questions:
As Salaamu Alaikum

Although we Muslims don’t make a celebration of birthdays, is there anything wrong with a simple acknowledgment of the fact that a person is another year older and extending Best Wishes, or simply saying “Happy Birthday”(no gift, no card, no cake with candles, no balloons…etc.)? If a Muslim gets an invitation to a non-Muslim’s birthday party, would it somehow be un-Islamic to attend?

What about giving a gift for no particular reason, as a random act of kindness, or giving a gift of something useful that you know the recipient can appreciate and use, or maybe even something that he/she actually needs? Continue Reading →
