Q. Habit of haiz is 8 days and all bleeding stopped as if normal. After 3 or 4 days, my menses started again. Is it all haiz, all istihaza, what is what?

A. If your habit is 8 days, the bleeding after that point would be considered istihaza. During your istihaza you would need to make fresh wudhu for each salaah that you perform while not being soiled with impurity. You can visit the mosque, pass through a mosque if the need arises during her istihaza (although not preferred to do so), you can also read Qura’n while not soiled. Adult activities between spouses can also take place during the period of istihaza, should you so prefer.

We intend to make it simple for you. Here is a small chart to make it simple for you, it would allow you to do your own calculation. However, we still suggest that after you do your calculation, you have it approved by another scholar to see if you understand the rules that apply to you:

  • Minimum amount of days for haiz is 3 days
  • Maximum amount days for your haiz would not exceed 10 full days
  • Bleeding which was experienced by you does not need to be continuous but will be counted
  • Bleeding which occurs after the full 10th day is called istihaza.
  • The minimum period of purity between one’s cycles are 15 days.

Allah certainly knows best.
