Q: Asalam u alaikum imam. This is xxxxxxxxxx. How r u? I wanted to ask u if I can take a music class as part of my curriculum? (Text)
A: ?????? ?????? ????? ???? ??????? I am fine, May Allah bless you for asking. Wishing the same for you and those that surround you. Ameen.
One cannot take classes that promote the concept of music.
My being part (past and present) of the American educational system, I am aware that an alternative to music classes do exist. Your education must be acquiescent to that of the sharia –so as for you to attain maximum benefit in your future. If your foundation is based on a haram, the financial benefit which you are to derive from this tainted education, later feed your family with its benefit would also be viewed as tainted. Refrain from this unwanted/unnecessary voluntary behavior.
May Allah give you all the academic success you need to make you a better person, Ameen.

Q: What if I take the class and make istighfar while music is playing? (text)
A: To take the words of Allah and make istigfar whilst voluntarily being part of that which is haram is a major sin. It is a mockery upon the name of the Sacred Creator. To be part of haram and take the name of Allah can lead to Kufr. One cannot use the name of Allah in vain. Abstain from this behavior.
If you must be in such an environment, being remorseful is a requirement. Sincere tawba would be demanded later on.
Allah Certainly Knows Best.
