Q. what does  “Shabaan” mean? (is it a name or a month?)

A: It is the month before Ramdhan, linguistically it means “to appear” or when “the Arab tribes would disperse for water resources”.  However I like to use this linguistic meaning that one hadith emanates

The hadith is in Musnad Imam Ahmed, Vol 6, P261

Hazrat Usama bin Zaid narrates in a long hadith (only the relevant portion mentioned here) “That month a lot of people are oblivious about between Rajab and Ramadhan, it is a month in which the deeds Ascend (are sent) to Allah, So I like that my deeds Ascend (are sent) while I am fasting” correct chain of narration ???????? ?? ?????

Linguistically it would not be incorrect to also use the meaning of the word “ShaAba” (one degree of Shaban)

Like the Arabs say “ShaAba” in the meaning of sending.  Hence linguistically we can derive another meaning of the word “Shaban”

A month in which Deeds Ascend (or are sent) to Allah.  This meaning is strengthened by the hadith as well.

Muadh bin jabal narrates In Imam Mundhri’s Targhib and Tarhib:

“in the night of the 15^th of Shaban Allah gazes upon all his creation and forgives all his creation except a Polytheist and the one who is Mushahin (Grudge filled individual).

According to Ibn Rajab Imam Al Awzai says “Mushahin means the one who has ill feelings towards the Prophets Sahaba (companions)” or an innovative person.

And Ibn Thawban says” The one who spills the blood of this Ummah”.

Q: is there any other unique feature of this 15^th of Shaban night?

This is a narration by Al-Qasim bin Muhammed (Abu Bakr RA’s Grand Son)

The Prophet (SAW) says: “Allah descends (how only Allah knows but we submit and believe and ask no morphological question on how) on the night of 15^th of Shaban to Sky of this World, He forgives everything (notice everything not everyone, how gracious is Allah!) except a Human who is a polytheist and a grudge filled person.”

This hadith is in Ibn Khuzayma’s Book of Tauhid under what is termed as the “Chapter of the News that is Authentic.” Hence in the beginning of this chapter he designates it Sahih.
