‘fasting and breastfeeding’

Q: Asalamualikom Imaam,
I hope you are in best of health. I have a quick question regarding fasting and breastfeeding please answer in the next 2 or 3 days if possible.
I know there has been change in the milk supply after the recent fasts due to the number of wet diapers and the fussiness of the child which is not the usual case.
I cant give her formula because i still plan on b’feeding her after Ramadan and introducing formula would decrease or maybe even stop the milk supply.
Please advise me on what the best thing to do would be and is it permissible for nursing mothers to not fast for this reason.

The scholars are unanimous, if breastfeeding would have an adverse affect upon the health of the mother and/or child, then in such a situation a woman may not fast. She would have to make up for the missed fast at a later point in time.

Based on what you have mentioned above, an alternative for you maybe as follows: fast every alternative day, this way the flow rate of milk would not be as diminished. If this too fails in giving you the desired outcome, then skip fasting and do its makeup when days get shorter or as soon as health conditions improve.

Allah Certainly Knows Best.
