How would adoption work in the United States by an Islamic couple?

Q: How would adoption work in the United States by an Islamic couple? Adoption is a common practice among Judeo-Christian faiths but from my knowledge, Muslims today seem to be cautious to adopt because of the complications it may cause. For example the child is not considered muhrim to the other family members and therefore he/she should not be left alone with family members of the opposite gender. It seems sad that because of these restrictions children don’t have the opportunity to be raised in an Islamic household. Of course foster parenting is always an option but it is generally only a short term solution until they may be placed with an adoptive family. In what instances would you recommend adoption? I realize that the prophet adopted a son, which is one of the reasons it is so appealing to me, however, current adoption systems don’t really favor that style of adoption making it difficult. How could a modern Muslim family make this work practically?

…host incoming international visitors for an evening meal.

Q: Salaam w’allahkuum:
We arrange for local community members to host incoming international visitors for an evening meal. Many of our visitors are from Muslim countries where halal food and markets are readily available. Many of our local hosts choose to serve fish and I would like to ask that for those who are strictly adherent to a halal diet, must this fish be purchased from a halal market or butcher? Or, can fish (not shellfish) purchased from any supermarket be served?

I fall in love (or maybe that’s what I think in my head)

Q:

A.A my beloved imam,

Alhamdulilah Allah guided me to the straight path, and made everything easy upon me. Many of my friends in the past in high school and college dated guys or were in a relationship. I never spoke with a guy on the phone or text him. Whenever I liked a guy I would pray Istikhara to seek refuge from that feeling and I always find the solution. The temptation of texting/chatting or calling guys was made dislike for me.

Now I fall in love (or maybe that’s what I think in my head). This guy was not a practicing Muslim before, and now he became religious, and that is what attracted me towards him. I started to text him, and for some days he responds to my text messages but for the most part he doesn’t. I became so attached to this individual that I admire everything he does. I prayed Istikhara to find a solution for this problem. I saw two dreams: one where I have a big fight with his family and I start to hate everything in this world. The second dream, he approaches a girl at a meeting and asks for her hand in front of me. At that moment I became really depressed, and heard a voice from outside saying “You wasted your heart and given it to one that is forbidden for you”. Once I saw that dream I told myself that’s it; I will not bother to think of him, but after a couple of days I found myself still liking the guy. What should I do? And what do these dreams mean?

athlete behavior does not always match

Q: Salaamu Alaikoum,

My friend and I were talking about a particular athlete at a University.  This athlete is a very good player, but off the playing field this athlete is known to not carry himself in the most appropriate way, and is a bad influence to many looking up at him, yet many people cheer and route for this athlete because of how good they are at this particular sport.  We started to have a debate about whether it was ok to still cheer for this athlete. menses and the quran

Q1: JazzkAllahu kharina Imam,

What about touching the quran in that situation? According to the Shaifi I was taught that you could touch the quran but recommended to touch it with cloth? Can you clarify that please? (comment box)

JazzkAllahu kharian imam!

Q2: Can one touch the quran when in menses. Did you say yes a while back or not?  Some sites allow for it. Its confusing. If you can give a Hadith or ayah or something then I would appreciate it (email)

Q3: What is the ruling for a woman with weak memory that has memorized the quran? Can she read? (email)

Answers:

? ???? ???? ??????- ?? ??? ?????? ??? ????

Do not touch the Quran except while pure.

The above is found in: Imaam Ahmad, Nisia, Abu Duwood, Bayhaqi

? ?? ???? ?? ???? ??? ???? ??? ???- ??? ????? ???? ???? ??? ???? ???? ???? ??? ?????? ???: ?? ??? ?????? ??? ???? ????

Do not touch the Quran except you are pure (clean.)

The above can be found in the following books: Daruqutni, Abu Dawood, Bayhaqi, Mustadrik Hakim, Musnad Abdul Razak, Tabrani

The scholars have derived laws based on the above as well as the quranic phrase:

???? ????????? ?? ?????? ???????????????

In conjunction with the above, one cannot touch the Quran whilst in the state of menses. Should need arise, touching the Quran with a separate cloth that is not attached to the Quran or body is allowed by Ahnaf. Imaams shafee and malik do not allow for this type of touching either {more so, touching the Quran merely for the sake of touching it} (naturally more so when viewed on the above injunction.) We grant respect to all the above views within their rightful context.

Ahnaf allow the quran to be touched with a handkerchief, hat, piece of cloth – all these articles are detached from the body thus its allowance.

Reading the Quran by holding it in the state of menses or major impurity that requires bathing is not allowed by all major scholars. The debate is weather a woman in menses can read the Quran in the state of menses without touching it whilst she has memorized it and fears forgetting it. Our contention is that if it must be read in such a state, it must be read in the mind, without the movement of the tongue. If it must be touched, it must be done with a piece of cloth that is detached from the Quran. Or it can be read whilst looking at a screen from a distace or whilst some other person is holding it. Again, it would not be read aloud, it would read in the mind without movement of tongue or comprising of any sound.

Under general circumstances we must not advocate reading Quran during menses. A woman would be given her full reward for such patience. Her reward would not only be for NOT reading the Quran in her given state, but also for following the Quran as the Quran demands.

Allah Certainly Knows Best.
