Islamic QA for North America

Iranian does not always mean Shia, and vice versa

Q: What is the Moslem position regarding the killing of an Iranian cleric (by the Saudis)? Thank you.

A: He was not Iranian. He was Saudi. Kindly rearrange your stereotypes.

It appears that you think that all Shiites are Iranians. This is tantamount to saying, there are no American Shia, or Pakistani Shia, or Nigerian Shia, and that there are no Sunni Iranians! Additionally, why are Muslims expected to have a position on certain selected events, but not on others? For example, we are not being asked on the Muslim position regarding the Nigerian Sheikh Zakzaky. We are not being asked about the Muslim position on the Black Lives Matter movement. We are not being asked the Muslim position on gun control, immigration, or a whole host of other things. But certain issues get traction and questions, and the browner and darker a population is, the less there is a likelihood for query. This is a curious thing. Everybody wants to be king for a day…but only over the population they deem worthy. Ask yourself the intention behind your question before you ask your question, and I say this to myself first before anybody else.

And lastly, this is a question for the Saudi embassy to address. Not for myself, who has no ties to Saudi policy making. This is a political issue with no roots or ties to American Muslims.
