Islamic QA for North America

‘never married’

Q: Salam,
I’m a 50 year old woman, never married, and wear hijab.  I want to know if talking on the phone is permissible before meeting the man for marriage purposes and how long can the phone call be.  I don’t usually talk to men as I’m homely and rarely go out.  So I don’t feel comfortable talking on the phone but the prospective partner insists on doing so before he can make up his mind to come and meet me.  He has talked on the phone to my brother but still wants to talk to me.
Please let me know what is the Islamic way in having a phone conversation with a prospective life partner and am I allowed to do so.
Thank you

A: Walaikumsalam,

Talking on the phone is permissible. However, one should also be aware, when two people are going to communicate, the third is shaytan — especially when there is possible desire between that may occur parties.

Explain to him that for the reputation and respect of both of you, a third part be present.  Request a mature responsible third party that is also your (islamic) representative be present when you talk to possible suitors.

May Allah (SWT) make your matters easy for you, InshaAllah, Ameen.

Allah Certainly Knows Best.
