Q: asalam alaykum Im asking what is the appropriate amount of Mahr I should tell my soon to be husband. I was asked the other day as to what my mahr is and I could not give him an exact answer as to I do not exactly know what to tell him. My father is no longer here and my mother just let the decision making be on me. My soon to be husband is from Fes, Morocco and I am from Salt Lake city, utah United states. I have asked around with fellow sisters here at salt lake city who are married and they have told me to ask for 3 months worth of salary based here in the united states. So my question really is, is there an exact appropriate amount I can just tell him?

A: Walaikumsalam,

  • Mahr can be negotiated by both of you. If he does have sufficient resources, the best mahr is Mehr Fatimi. This is calculated based on what the prophet (peace be upon him) requested for his beloved daughter Faatimah Ra. As of todays date (5/21/15) Mehr Fatimi is approximately US$1000. The least amount of Mehr is approximately $27 (As of5/21/15)  It is best that he will prefer to give you the former rather than then that of the latter.
  • The three month rule that people are giving you appears to be compensation for three months expense should you get divorced. However, the iddat (waiting time that occurs after divorce) is still his responsibility. The mahr is a separate payment as well as responsibility.

Allah Certainly Knows Best.
