Q: are we allowed to watch islamic programs and use cell phones during I’tikaf?

A: I’tikaf is an act of worship and every act of worship should have necessary concentration that reminds the person of Allah (SWT) and his/her purpose.

Viewing an Islamic program that helps a person’s faith get stronger is permissible, likewise, the usage of a phone for things that are necessary is also permissible.

Since people in I’tikaf cannot roam out of the musjid parameters without a legitimate reason, they should use such technologies in a manner that does not create a disturbance within the musjid parameters; likewise, they should communicate things that are sanctioned by the religion. All useless discussions should be eliminated.

I’tikaf is that type of seclusion that reminds a person of Allah (SWT) and is to function as a means to self reformation. Thus, do it in a manner that would allow you to derive maximum spiritual benefit.

Allah Certainly Knows Best.
